What happens to an elderly patient after the hospital treatment is over — but recovery is still incomplete?

Who supports the family when medicines, mobility, nutrition, pain, emotional distress, hygiene, follow-up care, and chronic disease management all have to be handled at home?

And as India ages rapidly, are we building enough systems for dignified ageing — or are we leaving families to manage one of life’s most difficult transitions alone?

India’s senior citizen population is projected to rise to around 230 million by 2036, nearly one in seven Indians. By 2050, elderly persons are expected to constitute around one-fifth of India’s population. This is not only a demographic shift. It is a healthcare, family, workforce, social protection, and dignity challenge.

On the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, 19 April 2026, Shroffs Foundation Trust marked an important milestone at the Ramakrishna Paramhans Hospital campus, Kalali, Vadodara, with the Bhoomi Pujan and Foundation Laying Ceremony of Sneh Sanjivani – Geriatric Medical Care Centre, along with the opening of the Advanced Physiotherapy Centre.

Sneh Sanjivani is our response to a critical gap in elder care.

It is not being developed as just another hospital block.

It is not an old-age home.

It is a purpose-built, medically grounded and compassionate elder-care ecosystem.

In Phase 1, Sneh Sanjivani is being planned as a 24-bed geriatric medical care centre, expandable to 40 beds, within the existing hospital ecosystem of Ramakrishna Paramhans Hospital. It will bring together short-stay medical care, supervised recovery, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, medication support, nutrition guidance, counselling, palliative and supportive care, caregiver guidance, and dignified elder care under one integrated framework.

The Centre is being designed around the real needs of older persons: safer recovery, reduced isolation, better mobility, emotional reassurance, age-friendly infrastructure, and continuity of care. Air-conditioned wards, motorised Fowler beds, wheelchair-friendly movement, visual and auditory alerts, shared living and dining spaces, and supportive healing elements such as Ayurveda, naturopathy, and horticulture-based support will help create a space where recovery is not only clinical, but also humane.

The newly opened Advanced Physiotherapy Centre under Ramakrishna Paramhans Hospital will further strengthen rehabilitation and recovery services, especially for elderly persons, post-fracture patients, stroke patients, and those living with chronic pain or mobility challenges.

But the vision of Sneh Sanjivani goes beyond inpatient care.

The Centre will also strengthen community-based geriatric support through chronic disease management, regular health check-ups, home-based support, caregiver training, creation of a cadre of trained geriatric assistants, an equipment bank on rent, remote monitoring of critical health parameters, and facilitation of home delivery of affordable, quality generic medicines for elderly patients requiring long-term medication.

This is where Shroffs Foundation Trust’s vision becomes distinctive: to build not merely a facility, but a continuum of care — from hospital to home, from treatment to recovery, from family stress to structured support, and from ageing with vulnerability to ageing with dignity.

A society is known by how it cares for its elders.

Through Sneh Sanjivani, Shroffs Foundation Trust seeks to contribute to a future where elderly care is more accessible, more integrated, more compassionate, and more prepared for the India that is already emerging.

Ageing needs more than treatment.

It needs dignity, rehabilitation, continuity, safety, and support.
